Always Carry An Extra Battery (Or Two)
One of the absolute worst things which can happen to a photographer is to run out of juice when taking photographs! I mean, is that not the reason we bring out big, heavy cameras in the first place? Well even with today’s long-lasting batteries, having only one is never enough.
You see the most stunning vista on which you have ever rested your eyes, and you cannot capture the moment because your camera has ran out of power. And worst yet, you have no back-up battery to ensure that you do not miss those moments. Well, the simple solution should be to always carry an extra battery. On the list of items a photographer should always have, extra batteries rest on the same echelon of having enough memory cards to store all the photographs and power the camera through your photo sessions. These days, neither photographs or batteries are terribly expensive (the advanced and pro bodies can have batteries which are a little pricey, but if you can afford a body costing a few thousand dollars, you have spend a few dollars to pay for an extra battery; after all, what use is a $5,000 camera without power?).
A way to double the amount of power in your cameras comes by way of the battery grip. Battery grips are accessories that attach to your SLR camera which give the camera the capability of a second battery and the ability to shoot vertically more easily via the second shutter release button. Granted, even with a battery grip, you should have extra batteries because the batteries will still eventually go dead. And essentially you are just doubling the life of the camera’s battery source: You still do not want to be caught without any power.
On the list of must-haves for the photographer, extra batteries rests at the top of the list. Without power, ostensibly your camera is worthless. So, if you do not already have extra batteries be sure to put that on the top of your photography “wish list”.
