So I know a ‘Camera Body’ is a camera without a lens. So is a ‘Camera Outfit’ with a lens included?

Camera “outfit” sounds like you have found a site that sells cameras for far below the market price, usually selling gray market cameras, non-OEM lenses and do not include all the necessary accessories that come with a camera when you buy it from a legitimate store … like a battery and charger for instance
Do you need a DSLR, or do you need a 35 mm SLR for your first classes in photography, where you learn how to expose film, develop it and print it?
If you do need a DSLR, the most bang for the buck is the Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens for under $450 or for $600 the same camera and lens plus a 55-200 mm lens.
Amazon, B&H Photo, Adorama, Ritz, Calumet and others are reputable sellers of DSLR systems. At any given time, one of them has a “deal” on cameras and lenses
Don’t be intimidated by classmates who show up with $8,000 Canon 1Ds, Mark III’s or Nikon D3x’s. For what you need, the D40 is just fine … after all if a seasoned WNBA sports shooter uses one, it should work just fine for you as a beginning photojournalists. I used an old Nikon F2 when I was on the school paper and it was just perfect. What you need more than an expensive DSLR is more lenses. The 18-55 mm and 55-200 mm will do just fine …. if you have a few extra bucks, get the D40 but with the excellent 18-200 mm VR lens. I use that lens all the time when shooting for newspapers and magazines
