Constant red-eye with Canon PowerShot SD600 Digital Elph?
I have had this camera for almost a year. Looking back at pictures today I noticed that no matter who it was, inside or out, light or dim, everyone has red-eye. I know with the various photo programs I own I can remove the red-eye, but it never seems to look authentic. Anyone have any advice about the camera settings, etc. to reduce this problem? I have two young sons that I photograph the most, usually candids in the house. We have a vacation coming up next week and are planning on going to a couple childrens’ museums and an aquarium, so I need some info on what to do with the settings in those situations, too. I usually do have the camera’s auto red eye reduction set.
Put your flash in anti-Red Eye mode (often indicated by a picture of an open eye). This mode has the flash burst twice — once to get the correct exposure, then another time to contract the pupils of the subject. You’ll note that red eye comes from the camera reflecting off the blood vessels behind the eye.
While dim light may be the most common cause of red eye, there are many situations that can cause a person’s pupils to become larger. For instance, if you’re looking at something that you like, your pupils may expand.
Also, most photo programs that solve Red Eye do so by sensing a dot of red and replacing it with a dot of black. Which often makes pale-eyed subjects look dark-eyed. Photoshop (and possibly its free counterpart, Gimp) lets you can replace the dot of red with color from the rest of the iris; a more time-consuming process, but one that will get you more authentic-looking results.
