What is the difference between a PEN camera and a DSLR camera?

I recently went searching for a digital camera I might potentially buy, to replace my current point-and-shoot camera. I was reading up on this one Olympus camera, and one thing it actually said was the a DSLR camera does not measure up to this new type of camera, called PEN. I am confused now, as to what is so much better about a PEN than a DSLR? If you disagree please, then, tell me why a DSLR is better.

PEN is just an Olympus product line, but the ones you are talking about are actually of category called Electronic Viewfinder Interchangable Lens (EVIL) or even MILC (Mirrorless interchangeable lens camera). Most are of the micro 4/3rds format sensor size, whereas most DSLRs are APS-C or 35mm sized.

A DSLR has a mirror or prism inside so that when you use the viewfinder, it’s an optical viewfinder and you look through the lens. EVIL cameras do not have a optical viewfinder, instead use an electronic one that is like a little screen… this means that they get around the cost/size associated with a mirror by not including one (also 4/3rds is a slightly smaller format than APS-C) and produce smaller cameras. However, as electronic viewfinders are not real time (the picture you see has to be processed to the screen and so forth), they can be a sec behind what really is happening and all this processing takes additional battery power to operate. The benefit is that you can see the image’s exposure exactly as it will be and more info can be overlaid onto the screen, like histograms.

What you choose is up to you, but personally I would not choose a micro 4/3rds camera. The sensor is slightly smaller, but really it’s like 40% or such, even if it’s splitting hairs. I may be wrong about that number but I do know it’s smaller. Also, the system banks on being small and convenient, which is not a real need for me or anybody that I know. Another thing is that they have a lot of pancake lenses that I always see advertised, which all happen to be primes. Personally I hate primes as I really like to see what a scene looks like in different perspectives, so that would lead to having lots of lenses and lots of changing. But if I were to get a zoom on a micro system, I would be trading in some of the system’s small form factor… so why not just get a larger thing in the first place? When it comes down to pictures though, they are both the same. It’s really about if you value an electronic or optical viewfinder and size.
