Getting my first DSLR (EOS 60D), but which lens should i buy?
I’m gonna order my first DSLR, the Canon EOS 60D in about a week or so. I’m mostly going to use it for film making, but also for taking pictures (quite close, not landscape pictures). But the kit lens that follows the 60D is quite bad (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) for low light conditions, which might occur in my situation.
I was then thinking of buying the Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens, which is really nice, but my photography teacher tells me that im quite “locked in” with only a 50mm as a primary lens. Does anyone of you know of a good lens that I could buy that does not cost like 20bazillion dollars, but is still really good (I would perfer a large aperture (1.4-2.8)).
Why not both? Changing lenses to suit the occasion is the whole point of interchangeable lenses, and the 18-55 kit lens won’t make a terribly big dent into your bank account. That deal sounds unusual though, as far as i know the 60D is usually sold with a 18-135mm kit lens.
While it’s correct that prime lenses can be restricting sometimes (one cannot always “zoom with the feet”), you won’t get any faster zoom than f/2.8. and these won’t be cheaper than the 50mm/1.4 either.
If you want a fast standard zoom instead of the Canon 18-55, consider e.g. the Tamron 17-50/2.8, either with or without VC (Tamron’s image stabilizer).
