The feature-rich PowerShot SD850 IS by Canon is a nice pocket size camera that falls into a mid-range price level. This ultra-small camera has plenty to offer when it comes to features including a 2.5 inch LCD screen display. The PowerShot features image stabilization with a 4x zoom lens and is an 8 megapixel camera. Of course, moving on to the image process features like red-eye removal doesn’t hurt the status of this camera by any means. Canon prefers to include a non-internal memory card. So the 32 megabyte SD card is included with the camera. While it won’t hold a ton of photos it should be enough to get you started – upgrading should be a priority.
The next camera up for review is Canon’s PowerShot SD870 IS. There aren’t many differences in features over the SD850 IS by Canon there are some cosmetic differences that are notable. There is a slight increase in specs such as an 8.3 megapixel sensor, plus the LCD is slightly larger at three inches. The camera features advanced technology and the Digic III image processor. This camera has shorter processing time partly due to the phenomenal face detection feature that is capable of detecting up to nine faces. The updated version features a control pad that is better ergonomically and more responsive.
If you’re looking for something that is less specialized and has more of an overall application, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 is a great option. This camera does lack jpeg processing abilities but you won’t be disappointed in your photos. This is a 10.1 megapixel pocket size camera with a 3 inch TFT LCD display. The LX5 is Panasonic’s follow up model to their super successful DMC-LX3 model. In trying to improve upon the LX3, Panasonic had their work cut out for them.
