.22LR AR Uppers And Conversions
The current operations in Afghanistan have put a premium on already expensive .223/5.56mm centerfire ammunition. At the same time the AR-15 platform has achieved unprecedented popularity as America’s most popular centerfire rifle. This has left a lot of shooters unable to shoot their cherished rifles as much as they would like. Reloading can only provide so much of a solution. The obvious way round this is to switch to inexpensive .22LR ammunition that can be purchased in 550 round ‘milk cartons’. There are two routes available. The first is to go for a .22LR blowback adapter which takes the place of your bolt carrier and bolt. If you do this, you can practice with your rifle as it would be with centerfire ammo in every other respect. The disadvantage is that the bullets are a slightly loose fit in the barrel so that you will get less than optimum accuracy. You will also need to clear the lead out of your barrel before shooting centerfire. The alternative is a dedicated .22 upper. This is obviates the clealing problem and is much more accurate. However, it is a vastly more expensive option, particularly if you have to buy a new Eotech or Aimpoint and magnifier and/or a set of BUIS and other accessories.
Two available blowback conversions are the Brownells .22 conversion kit and the CMMG .22 conversion kit. These are very similar and both use 10, 15, 26 or 50 round polycarbonate mags. These mimic the shape of 20 and 30 round USGI magazines, have self-lubricating, anti-tilt followers and use the follower to provide an a hold open facility. CMMG make an adapter for the mags to enable the rifle’s own hold-open device to function. CMMG offer their .22 conversion in either black phosphated or polished stainless steel. CMMG also offer a conversion kit that uses the rifle’s own forward assist device.
The Tactical Solutions .22 upper is marketed in two formats. The Tactical Solutions M-4 upper mimics the M-4 carbine in every way, apart from having a 16.1″ barrel to meet NFA requirements. It has the forward assist (non functional), bolt release catch, case deflector, ejection port cover, handguard and foresight tower of the M-4 carbine. It can also take all M-4 carbine accessories. It is intended as a low cost training platform for the M-4 carbine. The alternative LT upper is a lightweight sporter – it has a .920″ aluminum shroud with a button rifled steel liner inside of a tubular free floating handguard.
