Canon error 99: Signs and Solutions

There are many situations that can trigger a Cannon error 99 message. The key to fixing it lies in pinpointing the problem. In many cases, a Canon error 99 is something you can fix for yourself. However, depending on the model of Canon you own, it could also be a hardware error, in which you’ll need to have it serviced or replaced. Regardless of the cause, you should be able to fix the error and get back to snapping quality photos. Here are a few troubleshooting suggestions to consider.

What many new photographers don’t realize about the Canon error 99 is that it doesn’t specify a specific problem. Rather, its presence indicates that there is simply something wrong with your camera. In some cases, the solution to your problem is as basic as turning your camera off, waiting a few seconds, then turning it on again. If this doesn’t work, the next step in identifying the cause of the error is to perform basic maintenance on your camera. It may sound obvious, but you would be surprised at how many problems can be solved simply by changing your batteries or upgrading your firmware. In other cases, the Canon error 99 may be due to a problem with the software. A classic example would be using a memory card that is in some way corrupt or damaged.

If you find that these simple procedures don’t solve your problem, it’s time to take a good look at your lens. In many cases, a Canon error 99 occurs when the lens is somehow disconnected from the body, either through being too loose or having a thin film of dust. If adjusting the lens or cleaning it doesn’t make the error go away, it may be time to replace your lens or send it a repair shop for servicing. Keep in mind that if using a soft cloth on your lens doesn’t seem to get the job done, try using a pencil eraser. You would be surprised at how efficient it is for picking up trace amounts of grit. Just be sure to keep your camera pointed downward to prevent eraser dust from slipping inside the camera.

Are you using an older camera model? If so, the cause of your Canon error 99 may very well be due to the hardware. Older models have been proven to contain metals that can actually damage your camera as it gets older. Gold, for example, is a soft metal that is prone to wearing down or scratching. This allows minute amounts of dust and other contaminants to build up inside the camera. If you find that none of the aforementioned methods work in making the Canon error 99 go away, you may need to replace your camera with something a bit more recent.

These are only a few things to consider when troubleshooting a Canon error 99. While treating this particular problem may seem frustrating, you’ll be able to save yourself a lot of stress and effort simply by narrowing down your causes in this manner.
