How To Use Infrared Illuminators For Low Or No Light Video Recording
Many people think that night vision camcorder capability is only accessible to the armed forces or through the purchase of very expensive and high tech equipment. Today, however, the situation is rapidly changing and many cameras and camcorders have truly exceptional built in low light and infrared vision capabilities.
The most common and least expensive method of capturing video or images in the dark is by using infrared illuminators. One current example is the Sony Night Shot video camera which pioneered this technique over ten years ago.
The internal CCD recorder in many modern video cameras is capable of capturing IR light. This enables the unit to record better quality video at times when there is no light. And on some models, an internal IR emitter is built into the camera to increase the quality of images taken in low light.
When shooting indoors where there is some visible light, this system performs very well. Some find, however, that the camcorders don’t do as well in extremely low light situations, such as filming wildlife at night. There is a lack of a strong infrared light source to illuminate an outdoor area using only the low powered built in unit. But, by adding an add on IR illuminator, excellent night time video can be captured.
Add on illuminators range from accessory units you can get from the company who manufactured your camera to very high powered units from other suppliers. Many external illuminators are fairly inexpensive, and more powerful battery backed add on units that allow adequate extra IR light up to 30 or 40 yards can be found for a few hundred dollars.
By making use of an added IR illuminator of adequate power, it’s possible to set up a useful night vision video camera without a huge cost outlay. The extra IR invisible light that you use can’t be seen, but you can see through the LCD panel on your camcorder and see what you’re shooting in what will look like near daylight conditions. The use of additional infrared illumination greatly reduces or eliminates the ‘graininess’ you often see with low light photography.
Try some experimenting in in the dark where only the camera can see. It will be surprising to find that the camcorder you use can do a lot more than you thought.
