Can the Olympus Evolt E420 shoot widescreen pictures?
Can the Olympus Evolt E420 shoot wide screen pictures or do I need something special to do so?
If you mean 16:9 format compared to the 4:3 format of the camera, no.
single shot “panorama” modes in most cameras are just a gimmick. The camera masks off the top and bottom of a standard shot to make it look wide screen. The actual width is no greater than on a standard rectangular shot. A true “panorama” mode makes you take a number of shots (normally 3) where you rotate the camera and the camera stitches the pictures together. Some cameras even provide reference silhouettes on the edge of the frame so you can line up your shot with the previous one.
You can actually do this all in Photoshop or some other computer software like GIMP (which is free)

For a “widescreen” single shot, just take a picture with a wide angle lens and crop it at home to your liking. This is where pre-visualization on your part comes in handy. Compose the shot in your mind, get the camera set up to your liking, then shoot with the knowledge that you will crop out the top and bottom at home.
