would the power adapter for my laptop work for my brothers laptop even though they are different brands?

My brother just upgraded his laptop because the power adapter of his old one is knackered. My laptop is also really damaged and out-dated and my brothers old one is very nice and powerfull. Would it be possible to use the power adapter of my packard bell laptop on his compaq?
